Building The Radar

Updated April 5, 2016

There isn't really anything unique about my radar build, but I'll document it here.

Prior to this, my wife complained that I wasn't getting much use out of the Dremel she bought me.

I had to make a little extension for the circle cutter when making the large discs.

A significant part of the job is cutting out lots of circles. You get get a lot of them out of a 2'x2' square of acrylic.

My main problem was that the cutting bit left rough edges that I will have to smooth out later.

I did some initial smoothing by stacking the discs and spinning them against a file.

This did not work as well as I had hoped, so more work will have to be done by hand to get a good finished product.

I used a template to guide me in cutting slots for the vanes. I used a disc on the Dremel for this job.

Little vanes, cut on a bandsaw. Not perfect but close enough.

Gluing together. I cut a piece of pipe on a bandsaw to make the ring. I'm not going to try to make a tapered one.

I bought the inexpensive GM12-N20 gearmotors from Banggood.com to use in the ears. Shown here next to a 1.25" wooden ball that I plan to use, and a penny to show the size.

I imagine using a similar process as Bob Greiner for making the motorized ears.
